About the role
Part of the General Counsel Function for the Society, the Senior Legal Counsel reports to the Managing Counsel for the Commercial Legal team.
The Senior Legal Counsel provides legally sound and commercially pragmatic advice on a range of matters, helping to manage risk (legal, reputational or compliance) while supporting the Society’s wider goals.
The focus is on advising stakeholders on commercial contracts, ensuring each is negotiated in line with regulatory requirements and the Society’s risk appetite.
The role also entails responding to queries from stakeholders, engaging with external experts and collaborating closely with other teams from the General Counsel Function and wider Society.
Ensuring that the Society remains compliant with legal and regulatory requirements in the commercial arena and acts in accordance with internal policies and procedures, as well as helping to set the team up for success by managing capacity, allocating work and being a key point of contact for the team and stakeholders, are among the key priorities.
Hours: 35, Mon-Fri
Location: Hybrid (At least one day p/w on Coventry site)

About you
Accustomed to a fast-paced and complex working environment, you’ll have a sustained track record of advising colleagues in a commercially sound and common-sense manner.
As part of the Commercial Legal team and the wider General Counsel Function, you’ll be able to identify areas for improvement and work with team members and impacted stakeholders to implement practical solutions.
You’ll have strong analytical, drafting and negotiating skills, ideally forged in a financial services or other regulated environment. Experience in outsourcing, business continuity, operational resilience and data protection would also be an advantage.
A natural leader, your ability to assess team capacity, delegate matters, guide and support, as well as act as an escalation point will result in high quality work from your team.
Qualified lawyer who holds a professional legal qualification which confers rights to practise in England and Wales.
