The DVLA and Inspire People are partnering together to bring you an exciting opportunity for a Data Engineer or an individual with a background in data/software engineering, DevOps, analysis or data science to contribute to the design and implementation of a big data analytics platform. £40,808 – £51,454 (includes a Digitech Allowance of up to £7,000) plus excellent Civil Service benefits and 27% pension. As a Senior Data Engineer at DVLA you will help build tools, services and pipelines to make data available to analysts, data scientists and report builders in a timely, consistent, auditable and reproducible way. You will join DVLA’s Management Information and Business Intelligence (MIBI) delivery squad in undertaking the design, implementation and support of a big data analytics platform building data pipelines to connect operational systems, data for analytics and BI capabilities.

Responsibilities of the Data Engineer:

  • Designing and leading on the implementation of data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI) systems
  • Recognising opportunities to reuse existing data flows
  • Optimising the code to ensure processes perform optimally
  • Operating the production data processing services you build

You will have the opportunity to build/develop your skills in the following: Azure, Event Hubs, Structured Streaming, Databricks, Delta Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps to name a few.

Essential skills and experience of the Data Engineer:

  • SQL and Python
  • Version control tools, such as git
  • Working with a range of data sources
  • Developing ETL pipelines
  • One or more data modelling techniques: Medallion,3NF, Data Vault, Dimensional Models
  • Any data technology specialism: Data Warehouse, Data Lake or Lakehouse

Location

This role will be based in Swansea, and we will be operating a hybrid working model that allows you to work between home and on-site giving you greater flexibility about where and when you work, subject to business needs and this also allows for ongoing support, development, and collaboration with colleagues.

Therefore, the expectation is that you will spend a minimum of 60% of your working time based at your principal workplace (DVLA). We would encourage you to discuss the working arrangements for this role with us during the recruitment process.
