Our client in the global professional services industry is seeking an Life Underwriter to join their department within Customer Services. The selected candidate should be proficient using data and software programs to determine the risks and terms of creating insurance policies for clients. They should also have a good understanding of statistics and probabilities to analyse the data and assess the likelihood of making a claim.
What you will do:
Provide fair and balanced underwriting decisions using the appropriate amount of evidence necessary.
Assess all applications that are not accepted by the online underwriting engine – initial applications, additional information, amendments – and assess all medical evidence upon receipt from third party sources.
Do so in a timely manner within agreed Service Level Agreements and always with the customer and the company’s reputation in mind.
Provide a telephone service for pre-sale enquiries, being the first point of contact for the advisers when they are looking to place business, providing accurate indications of underwriting decisions and working with Sales to ensure advisers consider the company their number one provider.
Liaise with Customer Services, Sales and reinsurance partners when required, representing the Underwriting department in a positive and collaborative way.
Develop a good understanding of the business and contribute to ‘best practice’ overall for customers and colleagues.
Innovate, share forward thinking and be able to identify opportunities for improvements, philosophy, processes and procedures.
Demonstrate good lateral thinking and proactive problem-solving skills, have sound decision making skills and the ability to recognize risk events, manage and escalate these where appropriate.
Display role model behaviours in line with company values, have good organizational and time management skills and be reliable and flexible.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).
Having authority level 6 or more at previous insurers is crucial.
Life Insurance (P4 – Expert) – at least 3 years’ experience of underwriting and a current working underwriting authority of a minimum of £600,000 Life, £300,000 Critical Illness and a working knowledge of disability benefits including Income Protection.
Have a proven working knowledge of Income Protection, Life, Critical Illness and disability products.
Have general knowledge of insurance industry codes and current practices.
Significant UK Life experience – international experience can in some cases be considered, particularly if it is from Australia/New Zealand.
Other international experience will not necessarily be discounted, but it will depend on processes from that location and should be supplemented by UK/AUS/NZ experience.
